Year 10 Pre-VCE/Pre-VCAL

YEAR 10 PATHWAYS

Year 10 students at Kambrya College have two distinct pathways available to them: “Pre-VCE” or “Pre-VCAL”.   These two pathways provide targeted preparatory experience for the respective pathway into Year 11 and Year 12.  Transition between the pathways at the end of Year 10 is not highly recommended, but it can be discussed on an individual basis.  Students are provided with support to make the most appropriate pathways decisions through targeted data based discussions with their respective Sub-School Leaders and their parents.  Students and parents should also consult the Year 10 Handbook and the Later Years Handbook for further information regarding the pathways in Year 10, 11 and 12.

Electives (for both Pre-VCAL and Pre-VCE)

Students who are in Pre-VCE or in Pre-VCAL are required to enrol in TWO electives per semester.  To ensure a broad range of experiences and to maximise the learning journey, students must not select more than two subjects from any one learning domain (eg. a student may not choose four humanities electives).

Unless otherwise indicated, all electives are of one semester duration.  Students MAY NOT repeat any elective.  Some electives will only be offered in first or second semester.  Some electives in semester two have prerequisite subjects in semester one – please ensure that you check descriptors carefully to avoid disappointment.

LOTE is not compulsory, but those students who intend to study a language as a part of their VCE studies should select either Japanese or German as a year long elective.

Mathematics (for both Pre-VCAL and Pre-VCE)

All students in either Pre-VCE or Pre-VCAL are required to complete mathematics.  Students may choose a mathematics option from Advanced Mathematics, General Mathematics, Foundation MathematicsFor advice on the most suitable maths for them in Year 10, students should consult their current mathematics teacher and/or Ms Natalie Davies.  Please note that entry into Advanced Mathematics is subject to successful completion of an entrance test and is at the discretion of the Mathematics Head of Department.

Pre-VCE

This pathway is suitable for students who wish to pursue a VCE pathway in Year 11 and 12.  It is designed for students who desire a pathway towards university or careers that require tertiary education or a VCE certificate.

Students MUST study the compulsory core subjects of: English, Humanities, Science and Mathematics (students may choose from three mathematics options).

Students can also choose TWO electives per semester and provide four reserve preferences.

One elective each semester may be a VCE sequence of study; however this will be by invitation only.  These invitations will occur towards the end of Term Three.  Eligibility to enrol in a VCE sequence is restricted to students who have demonstrated consistently above average results in their Year 9 studies. The College will examine student assessment records and invite applications from suitable candidates during Term 3.   Entrance into VCE units is subject to the approval of relevant staff who will consider the student’s performance in Year 9, their suitability for VCE studies and the submission of a successful application.  Note that students who successfully enrol into a VCE Unit 1/2 sequence as a part of their Year 10 program must maintain at least a B+ average to continue the Year 12 Unit 3/4 sequence when they are in Year 11.

The following examples are a guide only, and individual subject choices should be done so following careful consideration and consultation with appropriate staff.

Student A – This student is interested in a career in nursing.  He knows that to do this the most direct route is to complete VCE and go to university, hence he needs an ATAR.  He is strong in mathematics, and very strong in science.  He’s performed so well in science that he’s been invited to accelerate into VCE Unit 1/2 Biology as a part of his Year 10 program.

Pre-VCAL

This pathway is suitable for students who wish to pursue a VCAL pathway in Year 11 and 12.  It is designed for students who enjoy applied learning and who wish to start a later years pathway that will guide them towards further TAFE education or on the job training.  Students who desire apprenticeships or full time work at the end of Year 12 should definitely choose this pathway.   The Pre-VCAL pathway requires hard work, both at school and on the job!

Students will study the core subjects of English and Maths (students may choose between Foundation Maths (VCE), General Maths or Advanced Maths).  Additionally, they will undertake aspects of Work Related Skills and Personal Development through the delivery of VCE Industry and Enterprise Unit 1 (spread over the whole year).   Students will be required to select a Vocational Education Training in Schools (VETiS) program.  They must choose their VETis program from those delivered on site at Kambrya College.  Detailed descriptions of our onsite VETiS program are provided in the final section of this handbook.  Additionally, students will be required to secure a structured work placement for one day a week in an industry that is relevant to their intended career.  (Minimum of 100 hours)

Students can also choose TWO electives per semester and provide four reserve preferences.

Student B – This student is interested in a trade career, and prefers a ‘hands on’ approach to learning.  She thinks that she may be interested in completing a VCAL course after year 10, and then getting an apprenticeship in Hair or Beauty therapy.   She also enjoys cooking and has this as a back-up career plan.  She loves German and would like to continue it.  She has struggled in mathematics since Year 7, and prefers more hands-on applied mathematics.   She applies to enrol in Hair/Beauty at Kambrya on Wednesdays. She also prepares her resume and cover letter and applies at local salons to secure a Structured Work Placement.  She then decides that she would like her course at Kambrya to look as follows:
